His Excellency The Grand Magistral Delegate

Mr Anthony Bailey, OBE, GCSS,


In April 2010 Mr Anthony Bailey was reappointed by the Grand Master to serve for a further three years as the Grand Magistral Delegate for Inter-Religious Relations. Mr Bailey holds the rank of Knight Commander of Merit with Star of the Constantinian Order and Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Francis I.

In the field of inter-religious dialogue and understanding, Anthony is a member of the Advisory Board of the Three Faith Forum and a Member of the Consultative Board of The Maimonides Foundation which works to encourage greater dialogue between Muslims and Jews. Anthony also is active in interfaith projects in the Balkans is a Trustee of the Path to Peace in the Balkans Foundation. In January 2006 Lord Carey of Clifton, former Archbishop of Canterbury, appointed Anthony to the Advisory Board of Foundation of Reconciliation in the Middle East.

Anthony is active in educational matters. He was appointed in July 2005 by the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster as a Foundation Governor in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster, with specific responsibility as part of the Governing Body of The Douay Martyrs School in Ickenham. In the same year he was appointed as a Board Director of the United Learning Trust - an Anglican charitable educational body founded in 1883. Between 2002-2010, Anthony advised the Department of Education and served as a member of the London Challenge Ministerial Advisory Group and the Ministerial Task Force on Gifted and Talented Education. In 2009 Anthony was appointed a Governor of St Mary's University College in Twickenham, Middlesex.

Anthony has a deep understanding of the Arab and Muslim world and advises both professionally and personally numerous high profile organisations. Since 1999 these have included the King Faisal Foundation, Moroccan-British Society, the Anglo-Arab Organisation, Saudi-British Society, the Bahrain Society, International Gold Mercury Award. Since 1999 Anthony has served as Chairman of Painting & Patronage - a prominent cultural and educational exchange programme under the joint Presidency of the Governor of Makkah Province HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal and HRH The Prince of Wales.

Anthony is an active committee member of The Passage – Britain's largest centre for the homeless since 2001 and a Director of The Forthspring Inter-Community Group which works to foster ties between the divided communities of Northern Ireland. Mr Bailey is also Patron of the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group within the British Parliament since 2003.

Anthony was appointed in the 2008 Queen’s Birthday Honours List as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of his contribution to “Inter-Faith Relations and to Charity”. Anthony holds other state and religious decorations in recognition of his professional work and charitable activities. HM The Queen has granted Unrestricted Permission for him to receive and wear these honours where such permission is required.

In 2009 His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI raised Anthony to the rank and dignity of Knight Grand Cross of the Pontifical Order of Pope St Sylvester having earlier been decreed in 2004 to the rank of Knight Commander of the same Order by the late Pope John Paul II. Among other state awards bestowed on him are: First Class Grade of the National Order of the Montenegrin Flag (Montenegro), First Class Grade of the Order of the Madara Horseman (Republic of Bulgaria), Knight Commander with Star of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique (Portuguese Republic), Knight Commander of the Royal Order Al-Alaoui (Kingdom of Morocco), Knight Grand Cross of the National Order of Juan Mora Fernandez (Republic of Costa Rica), Grand Officer of the Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero (Republic of Panama), Knight Commander of the National Order of The Cedar (Republic of Lebanon), First Class with Collar grade of the Order of Unification - 22 May (Republic of Yemen), First Class Grade of the Syrian Order of Outstanding Merit (Syrian Arab Republic) and Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, (Holy See).

Anthony Bailey was educated at The Douay Martyrs School, Ickenham, and later graduated with honours in Eastern and Central European studies from University College London. Since 1991 Anthony has worked in the communications arena and held senior posts with a number of prominent companies including Burson-Marsteller, IBM Europe, Middle East, Africa and Eligo International.
