His Excellency Mr Anthony Bailey, OBE, KCSS, KCHS, KCMCO, KCFO,
Grand Magistral Delegate,


Mr Anthony Bailey was appointed for three years by the Grand Master as the worldwide Grand Magistral Delegate for Inter-Religious Relations based within the Grand Magistry in Rome in April 2006. Mr Bailey previously served for a statutory three year period from 2003-2006 as the Delegate of the British and Irish Delegation. Previously Mr Bailey held the post of Vice-Delegate and Chancellor for Great Britain and Ireland from 2000-2003. Mr Bailey holds the rank of Knight Commander of Merit with Star of the Constantinian Order and Knight Commander of the Royal Order of Francis I.

Anthony Bailey was educated at The Douay Martyrs School, Ickenham, and later graduated with honours in Eastern and Central European studies from the School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies, (now University College London), part of the University of London, Veliko Turnovo and Sofia Universities in Bulgaria, and Budapest University of Economics, Hungary.

From 1991-1995 Mr Bailey was appointed Senior Account Director of global communications company Burson-Marsteller. In 1995 he joined IBM Europe, Middle East, Africa, based in Paris, as Program Manager of Management Communications. Two years later in 1997 he became Managing Director, and since 2000, was appointed Chairman of communications company Eligo International Limited Since 2002, Anthony has been advising the Department of Children, Schools and Families (previously the Department of Education And Skills). In December 2004 Anthony was appointed to the London Challenge Ministerial Advisory Group of the then Department of Education and Skills and in 2007 was appointed as a member of the Ministerial Task Force on Gifted and Talented Education.

Anthony was appointed in July 2005 by the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster as a Foundation Governor in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Westminster, with specific responsibility as part of the Governing Body of The Douay Martyrs School in Ickenham, Middlesex, UK. In December 2005 Anthony was appointed a Board Director of the United Learning Trust - a charitable body founded as an educational charity in 1883 offering pupils a good academic education based on Christian principles with particular reference to the Church of England.

Since 1999 Anthony has served as Chairman of the Advisory Group of the Painting & Patronage royal initiative which in 2000 and 2001 brought together HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal in the largest-ever cultural exchange between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In September 2005, Anthony chaired and organised the 3rd Painting & Patronage initiative which took place in Sintra, Portugal, under the High Patronage and with the participation of HE President Jorge Sampaio of Portugal and HRH Prince Khalid Al-Faisal. The 4th Painting & Patronage initiative took place in Saudi Arabia in 2007 resulting in the largest ever cultural and artistic exchange programme ever between Portugal and Saudi Arabia.

Anthony has a thorough understanding of the Arab and Muslim world and advises both professionally and personally numerous high profile organisations. In 1999, Anthony was appointed Special Counsel to the King Faisal Foundation. In 2002 Mr Bailey was appointed by HM King Mohammed VI as a member of the Board of the Moroccan-British Society in Morocco and from November 2005-2007 served as Honorary Secretary of the British-Moroccan Society based in London. From 2002-2005 Anthony was a communications adviser to the Anglo-Arab Organisation and in March 2003 was elected an officer of the Saudi-British Society. Anthony is also Deputy Secretary-General of the International Gold Mercury Award. In January 2006 Mr Bailey was awarded the Medal of Merit and Co-operation by the President and Council of the Luso-Arab Institute for Co-operation based in Portugal.

In the field of inter-religious dialogue and understanding, Anthony is a member of the Advisory Board of the Three Faith Forum since 2002. Mr Bailey is also a Member of the Consultative Board of The Maimonides Foundation which works to encourage greater dialogue between Muslims and Jews. Anthony also is active in interfaith projects in the Balkans and in December 2005 was appointed a Trustee of the Path to Peace in the Balkans Foundation which is chaired by the Apostolic Nuncio accredited to the Republic of Serbia. In January 2006 Lord Carey of Clifton, former Archbishop of Canterbury, and Chairman of the Advisory Council of the London-based Foundation of Reconciliation in the Middle East, (FRME) appointed Mr Bailey to its Advisory Council.

Anthony is an active committee member of The Passage – Britain's largest centre for the homeless since 2001 and a Director of The Forthspring Inter-Community Group which works to foster ties between the divided communities of Northern Ireland. Mr Bailey is Patron of the All-Party Parliamentary Pro-Life Group within the British Parliament since 2003.

Anthony holds numerous royal, state and religious decorations and awards in recognition of his professional work and charitable activities. In June 2008 HM Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom appointed him an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in recognition of Mr Bailey’s services to “inter-faith relations and to charity”. HM The Queen has also granted Mr Bailey Unrestricted Permission to receive a wear a number of foreign state decorations bestowed on Mr Bailey. Among them are those of the First Class Grade of the Order of the Madara Horseman (Republic of Bulgaria), Knight Commander (with star) of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique, (Portuguese Republic), Knight Commander of the Royal Order Al-Alaoui (Kingdom of Morocco), Knight Grand Cross of the National Order of Juan Mora Fernandez (Republic of Costa Rica), Grand Officer of the Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero, (Republic of Panama), Knight Commander of the National Order of The Cedar, (Republic of Lebanon), First Class with Collar grade of the Order of Unification - 22 May (Republic of Yemen), First Class Grade of the Syrian Order of Outstanding Merit, (Syrian Arab Republic), Knight Commander of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, (Holy See) and Knight Commander of the Order of Our Lady of the Conception of Vila Viçosa (Royal House of Portugal).
